How the ratio is calculated
1080 ÷ 120 = 9; 1920 ÷ 120 = 16. Dividing both sides by the same value preserves the proportions and gives 9:16. 120 is the greatest common divisor of these dimensions.
Height = width × 16 ÷ 9. Width = height × 9 ÷ 16. These formulas change size without changing shape. They do not crop or pad the source.
Vertical video: scaling and framing
Scaling both dimensions by two-thirds gives 720 × 1280. A 4:5 crop at the original width keeps 1080 × 1350 and removes 570 rows in total. Reposition the crop if the centered version removes the subject; exact geometry does not choose the best composition.
Ratio, resolution and units
A ratio compares width with height; it does not describe file size, compression or image quality. Enter both sides in pixels, inches or another matching unit. This calculator assumes square pixels for digital images. Video with a non-square pixel aspect ratio needs its display aspect ratio checked separately.
