9:16 Aspect Ratio Calculator for Vertical Video

Calculate portrait 9:16 dimensions such as 1080×1920, resize vertical video, and plan landscape-to-portrait crops.

9:16 is the portrait counterpart of 16:9. It is nine units across and sixteen units tall. A 1080 × 1920 frame uses this exact shape; 1920 × 1080 is its landscape counterpart, not the same orientation.

9:16 uses the same shape as 9:16. Width ÷ height = 0.5625. Height is 177.7778% of width.

Use the resizing calculator above for a custom dimension. Changing both sides independently can distort the image; changing one side proportionally preserves the ratio.

How the ratio is calculated

1080 ÷ 120 = 9; 1920 ÷ 120 = 16. Dividing both sides by the same value preserves the proportions and gives 9:16. 120 is the greatest common divisor of these dimensions.

Height = width × 16 ÷ 9. Width = height × 9 ÷ 16. These formulas change size without changing shape. They do not crop or pad the source.

Vertical export dimensions

540 × 960, 720 × 1280 and 1080 × 1920 all have the same 9:16 ratio. The smaller pairs can reduce file size, while a higher-resolution source can preserve more detail. Pixel dimensions alone do not determine video quality: bitrate, compression and the original recording also matter.

What size is 9:16 in pixels?

9:16 is a shape, not one fixed pixel size. A common size is 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high. At 720 pixels wide, use 1280 pixels high. At 1920 pixels high, use 1080 pixels wide. Calculate height as width × 16 ÷ 9, or width as height × 9 ÷ 16. The notation 9x16 describes these proportions; it does not require an image to contain only 9 by 16 pixels.

Framing for a tall viewport

A portrait frame leaves less horizontal room for a group or a wide landscape. Keep the essential subject inside the intended crop before exporting. Interface buttons and captions can cover different regions in different apps, so preview the finished video in its actual destination rather than assuming one universal safe area.

A landscape crop is a major change

Cropping a 1920 × 1080 landscape image to an exact 9:16 shape retains only 607.5 × 1080 before whole-pixel rounding. That is about 31.64% of the original area. Padding preserves the source but introduces a much taller canvas. Reframing the source is often more useful than simply changing export settings.

Decimal heights are displayed to four decimal places. Rounding can change the final ratio slightly. For an exact integer result, use dimensions that are whole-number multiples of 9:16.
