TikTok Aspect Ratio: 9:16 Sizes & Crop Calculator

Calculate TikTok portrait dimensions such as 1080×1920, compare vertical and square layouts, and plan landscape crops and safe framing.

Plan a tall composition before exporting, rather than stretching a landscape recording. The calculator starts at 1080 × 1920. The sizes below are working examples; paid placements and organic publishing have different requirements.

9:16 is a practical full-screen portrait choice for TikTok. 1080 × 1920 and 720 × 1280 are two exact sizes with that shape.

What aspect ratio is TikTok?

Use 9:16 when designing for a full-screen portrait view. This compares width to height; it does not require every file to be exactly 1080 × 1920. TikTok’s reservation in-feed advertising specification recommends vertical 9:16 and also lists square and horizontal alternatives. Those advertising rules should not be presented as universal restrictions on organic posts or every other ad product.

Calculate a custom portrait size

For 9:16, height = width × 16 ÷ 9. A width of 720 gives 1280 pixels high, while a width of 1080 gives 1920. At 1000 pixels wide the exact height is 1777.7778 to four decimal places, so a raster export needs rounding. Whole-number multiples of 9 × 16 avoid this discrepancy; increasing both dimensions changes resolution, not orientation.

Reframe a landscape tutorial

A 2560 × 1440 recording cropped to 9:16 retains 810 × 1440, removing 875 pixels from each side when centered. That retains about 31.64% of the original area. Exporting the crop at 1080 × 1920 scales it by four-thirds. For a desktop tutorial, follow the active panel or redesign the screen recording and presenter into separate regions; tiny text will not become legible just because the canvas is taller.

Check captions and interactive overlays

TikTok’s linked ad specification explains that safe zones depend on dimensions, caption length and interactive add-ons. There is not one fixed rectangle that describes every post and device. Keep important faces, subtitles and product details away from interface controls, then check the actual app or placement preview. The geometric preview on this page cannot reproduce that changing interface.

Why square footage does not fill portrait

Placing a 1080 × 1080 clip inside 1080 × 1920 without cropping leaves 840 rows of extra space, or 420 above and below when centered. Filling the portrait frame instead requires a narrower crop, a new composition or deliberate distortion. Choose which content can be removed before scaling. This tool reports dimensions only and does not render backgrounds, process footage or verify an upload.

Plan a different shape without stretching

Compare cropping and padding in the main calculator before editing. The tools plan dimensions only; they do not upload or edit your image or video.
