Instagram Aspect Ratio: Posts, Stories & Reels
Compare Instagram square and portrait post dimensions with Stories and Reels. Calculate 4:5, 3:4 and 9:16 sizes and plan crops.
A feed image, a carousel slide and a full-screen video need different framing decisions. These are practical working canvases, not a list of guaranteed upload limits. The calculator starts at 1080 × 1350, an exact 4:5 portrait; use a preset for a different shape.

| Layout | Ratio | Calculate size (px) | Use and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square photo layout | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 canvas for square artwork. |
| 4:5 portrait photo layout | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Portrait starting point; not a universal maximum. |
| 3:4 portrait photo layout | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Check support in your app or publishing tool before export. |
| Story / Reel layout | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 full-screen composition; preview overlays. |
What aspect ratio is Instagram?
There is no one Instagram ratio for every surface. A square photo uses 1:1, a 1080 × 1350 portrait uses 4:5, and a 1080 × 1440 portrait uses 3:4. A 1080 × 1920 canvas is taller still at 9:16. Choose the intended surface first, then confirm that shape in the native app or scheduling tool. Do not assume that a photo-post limit applies to Reels, or that every publisher supports the same photo shapes.
Crop a 3:4 photograph to a 4:5 post
At 1080 × 1440, a centered 4:5 crop keeps 1080 × 1350. It removes 90 rows in total, or 45 from each vertical edge, retaining 93.75% of the source area. Move the crop if those edges contain a face or caption. To preserve every pixel instead, place the original inside a 1152 × 1440 canvas, adding 36 pixels on each side before any final resizing.
Prepare a consistent carousel
Use one deliberate working canvas for a connected set of slides so headings, margins and image positions align as people swipe. A 4:5 set can use 1080 × 1350 for every slide; a square set can use 1080 × 1080. This is a design workflow, not a claim that mixed formats are always forbidden. Check all slides in the actual publishing preview, including the first slide and any independently framed video.
Adapt a portrait post for a Story or Reel
A 1080 × 1350 post cannot become 1080 × 1920 through proportional scaling at the same width. A padded 9:16 canvas adds 570 rows, or 285 above and below when centered. Filling 9:16 by cropping the original instead keeps 759.375 × 1350 before rounding, then enlarges that region to the output size. Redesign the taller canvas if the added space can hold useful context.
Keep export geometry separate from previews
Reel controls, captions, profile previews and cover crops can display the same asset differently. Keep essential text away from edges and inspect each destination instead of relying on a universal safe-zone rectangle. Meta’s linked Reels guidance concerns advertising creative; its 9:16 composition advice is not a full specification for every organic Instagram post. The calculator plans dimensions, not compression or file editing.
Plan a different shape without stretching
